Global Gatherings

TV Show Call for Dancers and a Live Audience

"Global Gatherings," a WFSU-PBS TV show that has run for the past three years locally is again gearing up for its 2007 show on "Ballroom and Beyond: 2007"-an educational show designed to promote an awareness of dancesport or ballroom, together with its connections to other forms of dance (country dancing, modern and ballet, Argentine tango, salsa, among others) as well as hybrid forms (theatrical or cabaret dancing, which is a mix of ballroom, ballet and gymnastics).

The show will be performed to a live audience at the State Ballroom on the FSU campus from 5:30 p.m. till 7 p.m. at most; entertainers will need to be on site by 4 p.m. to test the floor and submit their music. Audience will be seated at about 5:15 p.m. This event is educational and is open and free for the public. It is sponsored by the International Center at Florida State University.

There are several invited performers already, but new talent is always welcome; the show only seeks to feature the best possible local dance talent it can find, which intersects with educational themes of the show. The deadline for acceptances will be the end of the month, January 31, 2007.

Accepted performers must be ready to send the following quickly via email:
  1. your individual or group names, and a short bio
  2. the description of the dance (salsa, Argentine tango, theatrical to bolero music, etc.)
  3. how long the dance would last (ideally, keep it to about 2 to 2.5 minutes per dance; typical audiences get bored past that--make it punchy, and don't waste time
For those simply interested in watching, please contact Ladanya so she has a "head count."

The FSU Ballrooms are located on the third floor of the Oglesby Union. The best place to park is on Palmetto Drive between Dewey Street and Woodward Avenue. There are some meter spots as well as faculty parking that should be open since it is after 5pm. Here is the link for a map: http://www.fsu.edu/cgi-bin/map/zoom?LIST=32

Parking may be an issue, so plan on walking to the site, well ahead of time.

Volunteers who wish to help with the various logistics of running the show (stage manager, ushering and seating people, making sure the songs are in order) should also contact Dr. Picart as soon as possible.
